Expanding the Protected Area System to incorporate Important Aquatic Ecosystems

What is the Project about?

The project’s core objective is to build a capacity to manage effectively the existing protected areas established for dolphin conservation and to expand their operational coverage while still meeting the livelihood aspirations of local communities especially the fishers. Additionally, this project will contribute to the sustainable management of the globally significant aquatic biodiversity of Bangladesh and build on the baseline initiatives in the region.

The project focuses on the transformative changes in terms of planning and execution framework to address existing and emerging threats to biodiversity in the project landscape, and, the strengthening of community capacities for managing and conserving aquatic ecosystems of the Sundarbans.

What has been achieved so far?

Project is expected to start in November 2015.
