World Environment Day celebrated

World Environment Day was observed on 5th June and the key message was, think before you eat and help save our environment. UNDP and the Department of Environment jointly organized the closing ceremony of the World Environment Day on 11 June 2013 with an open discussion on Sustainable Consumption, Food Security and Environmental Safety and award giving ceremony to the students of schools, colleges and university level held in the conference room of the Forest Department, Dhaka.

Dr. Hasan Mahmud, Hon`ble Minister, Mr. Shafiqur Rahman Patwari, Secretary, Mr. M.A. Hannan, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment & Forest, Director General, Department of Environment, Chief Conservator of Forest and Ms. Pauline Tamesis, Country Director, UNDP were present and delivered speeches during the closing ceremony.

Mr. Aminul Islam, Senior Adviser, UNDP was the key note speaker in the event. Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that about one third of all the food produced globally ends up wasted an amount which would be sufficient to feed the world`s hungry.

UNDP country Director, Ms. Tamesis reaffirmed UNDP`s commitment to building resilience through sustainable consumption and environmental conservation practices in the face of disaster and climate change.
