International Day for Disaster Reduction Held

A function for the International Day for Disaster Reduction was held on October 13, 2013 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center. Organized by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Social Welfare Minister Enamul Haque Mostafa Shaheed and UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Neal Walker spoke on the occasion as special guests.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister A H Mahmood Ali presided over the function, while secretary of the ministry Mesbah ul Alam gave the welcome address. The theme of the 2013 International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) was "Living with Disability and Disasters”.

Inaugurating the occasion as chief guest, the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, laid importance on capacity building of all forces including army, navy and air force so that they can respond during any natural disaster. The Prime Minister also called for giving more attention to the necessity of disabled persons during disaster and changing the present situation by including persons with disability in disaster resilience initiatives and policy making.
