Fernando Carrera joins inter-ministerial workshop on SDG implementationFeb 17, 2016
Fernando Carrera joined the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Member (Senior Secretary) General Economics Division and nine Secretaries in a special session on SDG implementation in Bangladesh.
Luis Fernando Carrera Castro is a leading advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals having served as a Cabinet level minister in his home country of Guatemala and as Ambassador to the United Nations in New York. This is his second visit to Dhaka, and he used this to offer his support to the newly formed Bangladesh Inter-ministerial Committee on SDG Monitoring and Implementation. This high level Committee, chaired by the Principal Secretary, will report to the Honorable Prime Minister every six months. The session also served as their first meeting.
Carrera shared his experience on the process of formulation of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. He highlighted the challenge for us all under the new SDGs is to “create a global middle class without killing the planet”. “The 2030 Agenda is a global vision to eradicate poverty and for cutting global warming everywhere in the world,” he said.
The workshop reaffirmed Government's commitment to develop a Country action plan to implement the SDGs through a participatory approach engaging all stakeholders. General Economics Division of the Planning Commission and Prime Minister's Office hosted the session at the NEC Auditorium, Planning Commission, Dhaka.
Critical issues in implementing the SDGs in Bangladesh were discussed, including priority setting, progress monitoring and data generation, and SDG financing. Principal Secretary Azad speaking as Chief Guest of the workshop said, “there is the highest level of government commitment to implement the SDGs in Bangladesh”. He emphasized that fostering innovation and transferring of technology will be key. Carrera also highlighted that in the course of rapid development, migration and urbanization are big challenges we must work with globally as we implement the Goals.
Dr. Shamsul Alam, Member (Senior Secretary) General Economics Division, Planning Commission chaired the high level workshop and set the tone with his presentation on integrating the SDGs into the development planning of Bangladesh. The workshop was organized in partnership with UNDP. Acting UNDP Country Director Nick Beresford said, “SDG 16 – building strong institutions – is key to delivering on all 17 goals.”
