Nobel laureate Professor Finn Kydland highlights the prospects of ICT in Bangladesh as a critical enabler for achieving Vision 2021: Opening of Bangladesh Priorities

May 8, 2016

The Copenhagen Consensus Center through its Bangladesh Priorities project has been working for over a year to identify, analyze and prioritize interventions that will deliver greater benefit per taka spent, helping move Bangladesh towards Vision 2021 and a more prosperous long-term future. The programme was jointly organized by Copenhagen Consensus Center & Access to Information (a2i) of Prime Minister’s office, a Programme supported by UNDP and USAID.

On May 8th 2016 at an event hosted by a2i at the Prime Minister’s Office, Nobel laureate economist Professor Finn E. Kydland and Dr.  Bjorn Lomborg, President of Copenhagen Consensus Center, named one of TIME magazine's 100 most influential people in the world for his approach to researching the smartest ways to do social good, made keynote presentations about the future potential of the ICT sector in Bangladesh as a critical contributor to the nation’s development. The Hon’ble Finance Minister attended the event as the Chief Guest.

Their research finds improving the process to streamline international migration through the Union Digital Centres (UDCs) could generate Tk. 22 of good for every taka spent. And digitizing the land records system would provide an incredible Tk. 619 of benefits per taka spent.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between a2i and Copenhagen Consensus Center at the event as well. Kabir Bin Anwar, Director General (Admin) of the Prime Minister’s Office and Project Director of a2i, signed the MoU on behalf of a2i while Dr.  Bjorn Lomborg signed as the President of Copenhagen Consensus Center.

Shahriar Alam (Hon’ble State Minister of Foreign Affairs), Abul Kalam Azad, Principal Secretary to the Honorable Prime Minister, Selima Ahmad (President and Founder of Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Dr, KAS Murshid (Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies), Dr. Mushtaque Chowdhury (Vice Chairperson, BRAC) as well as officials from other were also presented at the ceremony.
