Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status

World Teachers’ Day 2016 will be observed by a2i Programme with Teachers’ Conference at BIAM Auditorium, Cox’s Bazar on 4th to 6th of October 2016. The slogan of this year is “Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status”. Teachers’ Conference will bring together a bunch of teachers from all over the country and celebrate the world Teachers’ Day by acknowledging their valuable contribution in different educational projects of a2i. This summit will also provide a unique opportunity for the teachers to share their personal experiences and insights from their classrooms or schools with other participants.

Access to Information Programme (a2i) at Prime Minister’s Office has taken several initiatives to improve access to quality education and training. One of the biggest successes in this regard is to develop an online platform for teachers of primary and secondary level with Teachers’ Portal (www.teachers.gov.bd). With this teachers’ collaboration hub more than 1,27,000 teachers from all over the country upload, share and collect multimedia contents and share their ideas through blogs and comments. A2i programme has also brought positive changes in the education system of Bangladesh with Multimedia Classroom with more than 30,000+ multimedia classrooms in secondary schools, an additional 50,000+ at the primary level with more in the pipeline. Taking this success one step further, Directorate of Primary Education and Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education with the facilitation of a2i programme has trained more than 1,50,000 teachers through its ‘Teacher-led Digital Content Development’ program where teachers learned to develop and present digital contents for their classrooms, using materials found on the internet and simple presentation software.

Model content framework has been developed by a2i programme to upsurge the reach of multimedia contents in all over the country. Teachers upload contents in teachers’ portal so that teachers from the remotest corner of the country can gain access and download from the portal to use multimedia contents in their classroom. More than 1054 contents were developed by the teachers from this model content making framework. 41 teachers among those content developers will be awarded for their outstanding contribution in making quality contents. Other than that, 40 selected head teachers will also get leadership awards to appreciate their support and guidance to the contents developers in their journey.

Moreover based on the pedagogy, user rating, number of downloads of content, three best teachers are being selected automatically every week and got featured in the homepage of the Teachers’ Portal. A total of 77 best teachers of the week of Teachers’ Portal will get their reward at the conference for their contribution in the portal. Similarly, 35 content developer will be rewarded for being best content creator from the “Multimedia Content Development Competition” in 2014 and 2015.

Teachers’ Conference is one of its kind and unique approach to empower them with the opportunity to share effective pedagogical practices and engage in conversations and gain professional perspectives through their interaction with fellow educators during the Teachers' Conference. Other objectives of the Conference are the following:

  • To gather the best and promising teachers and enable them to excel in their respective areas by gaining experiences through a shared platform
  • To inspire the teachers in their professional development and encourage them to prepare digital contents that can be used in Multimedia classroom
