For development of CHT over 31 million US dollars

Jul 9, 2017

The Government of Bangladesh reaffirmed its commitment to fully implement the Chittagong Hill Tract Peace Accord, 1997, by inaugurating a new project “Strengthening Inclusive Development in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (SID-CHT)” that will be implemented with support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with USAID and Danida. The new development project that will be implemented in the next five years is focusing on sustainable and inclusive development of the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

This is a continuation of a successful project “Promotion of Development and Confidence Building in the CHT” that has been implemented with significant results since 2003 in the three districts of the CHT area – Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban.

The Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs (MoCHTA) as the executing agency will assume overall ownership and responsibility for project activities and will be accountable for the results. Support will be provided by UNDP within the framework of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Facility (CHTDF) programme. The CHTDF has been present in this remote and hard-to-reach area of the CHT since 2003 as the first large scale development intervention implemented in partnership with European Union, USA, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Australia, Japan, and CARE. Total intervention in the area since 2003 through CHTDF was USD 155.2 million.

“There has been significant advancement in the socio-economic development of the CHT but the overall development is still not satisfactory compared to other areas in the plainland. The new project will support the Government of Bangladesh to continue development in the Hill Tracts and enable the institutions of the CHT and local communities to pursue accelerated and sustainable socio-economic development,” said Honourable State Minister of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Mr. Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, MP.

The planned amount for the new project is US$ 31,629,363 out of which about USD 19.6 million is being funded by Denmark (USD 8.55 mil) trough Danida, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation SAARC Development Fund (USD 1.55 mil), USAID (USD 3.49 mil), UNDP (USD 1 mil) and the Government of Bangladesh (USD 5 mil). The remaining amount of USD 12 million needs to be mobilized by other development partners in the future.

“The purpose of development interventions in CHT is to make the entire region conflict proof so that the people can pursue their development aspirations in peaceful democratic environment and that no one is left behind. There is no peace without development and no development without peace,” said Ms. Kyoko Yokosuka, UNDP Bangladesh Acting Country Director.
