UNDP and Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (BEF) to enhance the private sector’s strategic capacity for inclusive growthJul 29, 2017
Dhaka, 29 July 2017 – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (BEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to enhance the private sector’s strategic management and professional capacity for inclusive growth. Mr. Salahuddin Kasem Khan, President of BEF and Mr. Sudipto Mukerjee, the Country Director of UNDP Bangladesh signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations. A number of senior officials from the UNDP and members of the BEF were present at the ceremony held on 29 July, 2017 at BEF office at Chamber Building,
The partnership is expected to pave the way for increased engagement of the UNDP with the employers of the private sector in Bangladesh with a view to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8) – Decent Work and Economic Growth.
Every year more than 2 million young people enter the workforce in Bangladesh. Many of them lack the relevant education to compete on the job market at home and overseas. The partnership will work to support the establishment of a Centre of Excellence with reputed international business schools drawn in to provide strategic management, leadership and foresight training to both private and public sector executives, to also cross-fertilize expertise for creating a business friendly ecosystem in the country.
“Efforts to reach Bangladesh’s development goals within the Agenda 2030 and the 7th Five-Year Plan, involvement of all sectors, especially the private sector is monumental. Private sector growth is vital for both economic diversification and employment generation particularly for the youth. Unless we maintain a balance between growth and employment we will be trapped by jobless growth which would threaten peace and stability. Through this partnership, we hope to help maximize local content and to that end facilitate establishment of a Centre of Excellence to provide management and leadership skills of private sector executives and promote Bangladeshi talent in global business. Today we have signed an MOU to work jointly towards achieving these goals”, said Sudipto Mukerjee, UNDP Bangladesh Country Director.
He also emphasized that this strategic management and professional skills development is a precondition for Bangladesh to become a developed country by 2041.
Bangladesh private sector is facing myriad of challenges including disruptive technologies such robotics and 3D printers and lack of leadership and management skills at the mid and senior level limiting desired private sector growth and impacting employment creation negatively as private sector is the major provider of jobs in the country. Through this partnership, UNDP will pool international expertise to support private sector leadership and management skills development and in setting up a center for excellence for strategic management and leadership training for the private and public sector mid and senior level executives.
