Aug 24, 2017

Radio Naf 99.2 fm is broadcasting a sequel progarmme on the SDGs and the right of the Rakhine people. The first episode was broadcasted on 9 August 2017 coinciding the International Day of the World's Indigenous People.

Earlier on July 22-23, 2017, an Orientation on Promotion of Ethnic Language Based Program and Rights Education through Community Radio Naf 99.2 fm was held by the Community Radio Naf 99.2 fm and ACLAB for t youths of Rakhaine and dalit communities at Radio Naf 99.2 fm station in Teknaf, Cox’sbazar. Radio Naf is working for all communities as voice of people of ethnic, non-ethnic, dalit and all religions. The objective of the orientation was to inform the ethnic youths about SDGs, role of youths to achieve SDGs as well as to involve youths to increase awareness on promoting and protecting human rights through community radio program in ethnic language. Supported by the Human Rights Programme, UNDP, the orientation was attended by a total of 17 youths (12 from Rakhaine and 5 from Dalit).

A number of major human rights violation issues in the locality like early marriage, lack of education opportunity for ethnic girls, education in local language, lack of security to celebrate religious festivals, insufficient health services & facilities and water & sanitation were identified by the participants which can be addressed through community radio naf for creating greater awareness and advocacy. The youth participants also proposed some radio contents such as docu-drama, radio magazine, news bulletin, investigative report, voxpop, interview, case stories, feature etc. to address the human rights violation issues through community radio Naf. Radio Naf made the participants acquainted with the process of recording, editing, broadcasting, etc. The participants developed 3 dummy radio programs on early marriage, education for ethnic women and health problems of ethnic adolescents during this 2-day orientation.

Surely this unique initiative will be a good example of localization of the SDGs involving youth through a community radio at the grassroots level.  The programme will be  broadcasted till December 2017.
