Consultation Workshop on Rio Conventions Awareness Plan with the JournalistJan 11, 2018
A half-day consultation workshop was brought to meet the environmental journalists and reporters by the GoB-UNDP project tilted ‘National Capacity Development for Implementing Rio Conventions through Environmental Governance (Rio)’ on 11 January 2018 at the Tawfiq Aziz Khan Seminar Hall, the Daily Star in Dhaka. The workshop had two-fold objectives to raise awareness of the media reporters regarding three Rio Conventions and also, to discuss their expectations on the media awareness plan being developed by the Rio project.
About 26 journalists, reporters and communication specialists from renowned media namely the Daily Star, the Daily Somokal, Bangladesh Post, the Daily Observer, New Age, Metropolis Inc, Dhaka Tribune, Channel 24, Kaler Kontho, Bonik Barta, Boishakhi, JagoNews24, Channel-I, ETV, German News Agency, Oxfam and UNDP graced the occasion. The workshop was chaired by the Mr. Md. Ziaul Haque, Director, Department of Environment (DoE), Dhaka and National Project Director of Rio project and facilitated jointly by Mr. A S Moniruzzaman Khan, Project Coordinator of Rio project and Mr. Nazrul Islam, Knowledge Management Expert of Rio project and Bangladesh Correspondent of German News Agency.
The participating representatives emphasized to form an effective mechanism of communication among the government, news agencies, and local community so that the exclusive stories and news on biodiversity conservation, desertification and climate change can be extracted. Suggestions were also made to the DoE for organizing briefings for the journalists on a regular basis, preferably once in a month. Noting the expectations, Mr. Haque also assured the continuation of meeting with the journalists and reporters more frequently in 2018.
