Consultation workshop on REDD+ Policies and Measures

A series of  regional consultation workshops  on the process of identifying Policies and Measures (PAMs) in preparation of a REDD+ Bangladesh National Strategy and Action Plan took place in Khulna, Dinajpur, Noakhali and Moulvibazar districts during the month of January 2018 .

The objectives of the consultation workshops  were to identify  potentials activities, actions, policies and measures to address the main drivers of deforestation and forest degradation (D&D) in the regions.

The UN REDD Bangladesh National Programme with technical support from UNDP and FAO is working with the Forest Department (FD) in the process. All the consultation workshops  were participated by the representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Forest Department, Department of Agriculture, Department of Fisheries, Department of Environment, Department of Livestock, and also representatives from the local government, community based organizations, educational institutions and media.

Similar workshops were also held in Rangamati, Chittagong, Cox’sbazar and Tangail districts in December 2017.

In these workshops, it was discussed that,  firewood collection, illegal logging, forest land encroachment, agriculture expansion, land tenure and lack of governance are the main drivers of deforestation and forest degradation in Bangladesh Number of measures also proposed by the participants to tackle deforestation and forest degradation. , All these suggestions and measures will be incorporated into the PAMs report and, eventually, into the REDD+ strategies/actions in Bangladesh.
