Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam today said the village courts are playing an effective role in resolving disputes in rural areas.

“The role of village courts in resolving small conflicts locally with transparency at law costs and in short time is appreciable as the judicial facilities are inadequate for the large number of the country’s people,” he said.

The minister came up with the observation while addressing a workshop on the review of Bangladesh village court activation project (second phase) of the Local Government Division (LGD) at BIAM Foundation in the city’s Eskaton area, said a press release here.

The development of the country is impossible keeping the villagers deprived, Tazul said, adding, “So, the government pledged in its election manifesto to reach the city amenities to villages”.

LGD Senior Secretary SM Ghulam Farooque, UNDP’s acting Resident Representative in Bangladesh Sudipto Mukerjee and team leader of the European Union delegation to Bangladesh Adrew Melt addressed the workshop as special guests.

The village court, comprising union parishad chairman, concerned unpazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and deputy director of local government office, is playing an active role at 1,080 unions of 128 upazilas under 27 districts across the country.
